On site, a watch is not jewellery first. It is a tool that gets hit on framing timber, covered in dust, scraped against scaffolding, and checked while your hands are full. The best option is usually the one that survives the workday without needing attention.

Builders tend to split into three camps: tough digital watches, smartwatches, and no-watch-at-all phone users. The digital crowd usually cares about waterproofing, a readable face, shock resistance, and a battery that lasts years. G-Shock-style watches remain popular because they are cheap enough to replace and hard to kill.

Smartwatches are useful for builders who run jobs, answer calls, check messages, or track health while moving between sites. The trade-off is fragility and charging. A smartwatch can be brilliant for a foreman who needs notifications without pulling out a phone, but it needs a rugged case and the discipline to charge it.

Analogue field watches still have a place if you want something simple and readable. Look for a guarded crown, mineral or sapphire crystal, strong water resistance, and a strap you can wash. Leather straps rarely age well around concrete dust, rain, and sweat.

The smartest buying rule is simple: pick the watch based on the worst task you do, not the cleanest meeting you attend. If you are framing, roofing, digging, or doing demo, go rugged. If you are mostly supervising and client-facing, a protected smartwatch or field watch can make sense.

Whatever you choose, do not overspend on something you will be scared to scratch. A builder's watch earns its keep when you stop thinking about it and it keeps working anyway.
